Brač

Brač is largest middle-dalmatian island, 40 kilometers long and, averagely, 12 kilometers wide. With it's surface of 395 km², it is the third island on the scale of biggest islands in Adriatic sea.

It is only 6-13 kilometers away from the land by channel called Brački kanal, which deepest spot is 78 meters. Going to west, it is separated from the island of Šolta by Split doors, and on east it is separated from island Hvar by the channel named Hvarski kanal (91 meters deep).

Island is built from carbon and lime rocks and it's developed about 100 million years ago in Cretaceous Period but it became an island in Holocen period. There also developed another kinds of ground by processes of sedimentation and erosion.

Mount Vidova gora is highest spot in Brač and also it is highest mount of all Adriatic islands (778 meters). It is Mediterranean area with relative smooth winters where are temperatures lower than 0° C very infrequent  (lowest winter temperature in last 30 years was -6° C). Summers are hot but fresh cooled by nice wind (maestral). This is so called "the olives area" and the hottest month is July (with averagely temperature of 24,5° C) and coldest month is January (7° - 8,5° C). Averagely year temperature is 15° - 16° C on the coast, and temperature in the interior of island, on highest places is little lower.

Island Brač is one of the most sunniest areas in Adriatic sea. Bol, which is placed on the south side of island of Brač has averagely about 134 clear 88 cloudy days in one year.

Salinity of the sea is very high and it belongs to category of clean sea which is well for reproduction of fishes and seashells, and it is also well for swimming, water sports and recreation. The pollution of the sea around Brač is minimal because there are not bigger settlements or industrial factories. One of most eminent and almost surpassing features of this island is clearness, transparency and color of the sea on the beaches in Brač.

The sea is relative warm, in August its temperature is averagely 22° C - 28° C and in February sea temperature is about 11° C and 14° C. The sea is a little bit colder on east and north side than on west and south because of influence of undersea springs.
